Erik had his race experience at MIS yesterday and let me tell you - it was quite an experience for him! Keither had been razzing him ever since Mom raced that he better not stall taking off since Mom didn't. I have a feeling that razzing was in the back of Erik's head the WHOLE time. Erik was 4th in his class to race, so he had much time to sit back and take it all in. Finally it was his turn to race, Jakey kept asking his Uncle Acka if he had seat belts and to not forget to put his glass down on his helmet (this goes back to Jakey and I watching motorcycles and he would ALWAYS comment on who was wearing a helmet and who wasn't and which ones didn't have their glass down). So Erik slides into the car and Keither gets his phone ready to record the start, just in case. Erik did FANTASTIC! Not even a little stutter or anything. It takes a couple laps to get used to the car, the race track, and everything else that's going on, but by lap 5, he was zipping around the track. All of a sudden we see smoke on the back straightaway coming from another car. So the yellow flag comes out and Erik has to pit. After a short break, it's time to slide back into the car and start again! Again Keither gets the camera ready to record the start, just in case he stalls. This start was just as good as the first and since he's already used to the track, he flies around the track. At this point he has 6 more laps to go, so he's doing textbook work (as my Mom was saying) out on the track. With 3 laps to go, another car starts smoking and the yellow flag comes out. One of the pit guys, told Erik he wanted to give him the full experience and jack him up and change tires and refuel! He didn't, but that would have been really neat for Erik. Erik didn't have to get out of the car this time, but now he only had 3 more laps to go and he had to start again! Of course, Keither was ready with the camera again and was "disappointed" when Erik started it without fail. We clocked Erik doing about 145, so he was glad to hear that!
After the race we hit a really nice restaurant on Wampler's Lake and had lunch with the family and Katie's parents. It was so nice to just relax along the water, enjoy some good food, great conversation and we even got to watch some football. I think everyone enjoyed their day and I'm glad that I got to be a part of it.
